  • In a busy city like Toronto, e-bikes are an increasingly popular way to get around quickly and inexpensively. Before heading out to pick up your own, make sure you understand the rules for e-bike riders in Ontario.

    Do you need an e-bike licence in Ontario?

    In Ontario, riders 16 years and older do not need a driver’s licence, e-bike licence, or other type of permit to operate an electronic bicycle or scooter, as long as the vehicle they are riding:

    • Is in good working order;
    • Has steering handlebars and working pedals;
    • Has an electric motor not exceeding 500 Watts;
    • Has a maximum speed of 32 km/h and a maximum weight of 120 kg; and
    • Is labelled in English and French as conforming to the federal definition of a power-assisted bicycle.

    E-bike riders must always use an approved helmet, but may choose whether to wear a bicycle or motorcycle style helmet.

    If you have a suspended driver’s licence, you may not be able to legally operate an e-bike, depending on the reason for the suspension.

    What are the rules of the road for electronic bicycles?

    The same rules apply to electronic bikes as regular bicycles. They must obey all traffic laws and signals. Like bicycles, e-bikes must remain on roads and highways, and cannot ride on sidewalks or any other places where bicycles or e-bikes are prohibited by municipal by-laws. E-bikes are not permitted on provincial controlled access highways.

    Municipalities can pass their own local laws regarding the use of e-bikes. Although they cannot require an e-bike licence, by-laws can restrict use in certain locations, including banning e-bikes altogether.
